John Porras is ook de helft van Barn Owl. 'Black Mesa' is het resultaat van relatieve afzondering in zijn kleine oefenruimte / studio in perifeer San Francisco. Het is de weergave van verlatenheid en de zoektocht naar licht in een onvruchtbaar landschap. Met andere woorden 'Black Mesa' is de woestijntegenhanger van David Lynch's 'Black Lodge', een opening naar hol mysterie. De muzikale inspiratie komt van Sandy Bull, Popol Vuh, Ry Cooder en Neil Young. Porras geeft de zon een donker randje met wazige tremolo gitaren, americana, stijlvolle fuzz en feedback en fijne psychedelica. ...mountains of drone that move like the ghosts of tectonic plates.
